Hatherop Parish Council
Serving the needs of the local community
CHEQS BIODIVERSITY GROUP and POLICY
In common with all other English Parish Councils, HPC has adopted a local Biodiversity Policy with the aim of improving the parish's habitats and enviornment for the benefit of nature and people. A local Biodiversity Group, comprising members of the Coln, Quenington and Hatherop communities has been set up to manage the plan, with the consent of all stakeholders and in concert with other charities, associations and organisations, which will unfold over the years ahead. Updates on progress will appear here and anyone interested in becoming involved with the group is invited to make contact via the CONTACT US page on this website.
Project Updates
Hedge Planting River Coln - January 2026
ECT and Hatherop Biodiversity group, led by Andrew Sykes, had a productive day despite the attorcious January Weather. During this second collaboration we managed to plant nearly 200m of new hedging. This will be beneficial for biodiversity in the future and deter casual fish poaching a perennial problem on this stretch of the river. Mark, the ECT river warden, reported a very healthy state of their section of the Coln with all aspects of the eco system flourishing including 4 otters. This provides a healthy ecological“ spine” on which to build.

Tree Planting Pitham Woods - January 2026
Since my last report to HPC we have undertaken a short joint project with ECT at Pitham woods which involved spreading protective mulch over the roots of a veteran oak (not old enough to be an ancient tree (400yrs old) but having some of the features of an ancient tree). The footpath around the tree was also diverted to prevent any further damage.
We will be opening a link to the HPC website in due course for observations and advice for parishioners who are interested. This will run alongside the CHEQS magazine articles.
I am still waiting to hear from ECT, once they have approval for the remodelling of Hatherop Park we will be able to hopefully get involved with the planting and remodelling that will be required to improve the site.
